This just happened outside my school - a 12.4L MAN diesel running away. Amazing sight
So many people were freaking out because they thought tear gas was being used on the school.

A run away does tend to make a spectacular end for a diesel.

I thought it was amazing. Everyone else thought it was the end of the world. That feeling of smugness when you're the only one that knows what is actually going on...

I honestly wouldnt know whats going on, can you explain why such a big cloud of smoke and that isnt black like the coal bro trucks.

In a gas car, you have a throttle plate blocking the air intake which your "gas" pedal controls. The injectors or carb then automatically add fuel to match, so unless you're at wide open throttle it's the air restriction that limits your power/rpm.
In a diesel, there is no throttle plate. The engine pulls as much air as it can each revolution, and your pedal controls how much fuel is injected. So if you introduce a separate fuel source, like for example oil from a leaking turbo (which is already similar to diesel), it will rev itself to oblivion with no easy way to stop it starves of oil and seizes.
Best way is to stop it is a board across the intake to choke it, or stuff a towel in (though you could hit the turbo blades).

A board across the intake or shirt/towel around or in it (mind the turbo blades) should bring it to a stop.

Must have been a glorious racket. Did the driver have enough sense to get out of the truck before it fully seized or grenaded? That is a crazy amount of smoke, and I'm sure there was some panic induced by that plume of smoke.
But lucky you, I've yet to see a runaway diesel. One of these days though, one of these days.

I've seen and had this happen to me once. The easiest and fastest way to shutdown the engine is to block off the air intake with rags, a block of wood or whatever is handy that will cover the inlet pipe. No air, equals no combustion and no runaway engine self destruction.

It's eating the engine oil.
